Klaus George Roy
1924 Wien - 2010 Cleveland Klaus George Roy, born January 24, 1924 in Vienna, composer, musicologist, music journalist. 1934 piano studies with Fritz Schreiber at the Neues Wiener Konservatorium. 1939 flight to Greta Britain with Kindertransport, 9 months later exile in the USA. Studied 1941-44 musicology with Karl Geiringer at Boston University, composition with Walter Piston Harvard. After having served with US-Army in Tokyo, he finished his studies 1969 with a master’s degree from Harvard. Founder of the music library Boston, freelance music critic for The Christian Science Monitor, radio editor and interviewer for WCLV 450 und WVIZ Channel 25; 1958-88 program director Cleveland Orchestra (program annotator, introductory lectures, exhibit curator), 1975-88 teaching position Cleveland Institute of Arts, 1986-1994 Cleveland Institute of Music.
Awards a.o.: 1960 Arthur Shepherd Prize, 1965 Cleveland Arts Prize, 1987 Dr. of Music h.c. Cleveland Institute of Music, honorary member of The Fortnightly Musical Club of Cleveland, Phi Beta Kappa. His oeuvre comprises more than 140 compositions.
Klaus George Roy passed away in Cleveland, Ohio May 28, 2010.
