Michael Graubart
1930 Wien Michael Graubart, born November 26, 1930 in Vienna, as the son of the owner of a shoe factory and member of the board of the Jewish community Vienna, and his wife Oda Graubart, née Soloweitschik, physicist, teacher, conductor, composer. September 1938 with his parents escape to Great Britain, where in 1949 he started to study physics at the University of Manchester, where he took his degree 1952. Being a musical autodidact, while working as a development engineer with EMI and a teacher he took private lessons with Mátyás Seiber in theory, analysis, composition, 1952-55 flute with Geoffrey Gilbert, 1967-71 conducting with Lawrence Leonard.
From 1966 on he worked as a teacher and conductor, 1969-91 he was director of music at Morley College; 1989-1991 teaching position at London Centre of Syracuse University (New York, USA), 1991-96 Senior Lecturer Royal Northern College of Music. Michael Graubart was founder and director of Ars Nova Chamber Orchestra (first performance in English of ‘Vier Lieder’ op. 13 by Anton Webern) and Focus Opera Group. He held introductory lectures Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Royal Festival Hall and Barbican Centre, London.
Compositions: mainly chamber music, lieder, choral works.
After his retirement Michael Graubart enrolled philosophy in London.
