Brainin, Nissel and Schidlof fled to the UK 1938/39 (Nissel and Schidlof as Kindertransportees), met in internment camps for 'enemy aliens'. Studies with Max Rostal a. o.. 1947 establishment Amadeus Quartet, 1948 London debut Wigmore Hall; untill premature death of Peter Schidlof almost 40 years of collaboration as one of the leading string quartets worldwide: formidable international career, large discography, numerous awards, i. a. Order of the British Empire, ‘Golden Gramophone’, honorary doctorates of the Universities of London, York, Weimar, Order of Merit Federal Republic of Germany, Austrian Order of Merit for the Arts and Sciences.
